Cigarettes, Vape Products, and Marijuana: A Case Study Examining Alignment of Student, Educational Leader, and Law Enforcement Perceptions on a College Campus
Taylor Whitehead
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, California State University, Stanislaus
Using the interpretative framework of social constructivism, the purpose of this study was to understand the alignment of college students' perceptions regarding cigarettes, vape products, and marijuana use with the perceptions of campus authorities charged with implementation of EO 1108. Through a qualitative case study at a California State University campus, a deeper understanding of perspectives of students, educational leaders, and campus law enforcement personnel was gained. Findings from the participants' narratives are grounded in the theoretical framework social cognitive theory (Bandura, 1986) and themes reveal environmental influences and socio-cultural influences were integral in shaping perceptions of cigarettes, vape products, and marijuana. Future research should focus on anti-racist practices for educational leaders, supplemental programming directed at students, and the importance of student input regarding policy implementation.
