Recruitment of Racially Diverse Educators
Rachel M. Henderson McCarthy
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Saint Louis University
The population of racially diverse teachers is minimal in comparison with the population of minority students in K-12 schools across the country. Within education, districts are not successfully recruiting teachers of color. Districts having a clear focus in finding mitigating efforts to close the opportunity and achievement gap were identified and examined. Specific measures and action steps the districts had taken in order to increase the number of racially diverse educators were examined and synthesized with actions that were able to be replicated in any district taking a central focus. A comprehensive list of recommendations was created to assist other districts in increasing their numbers of diverse educators in the classroom. The recommendations were developed from action steps that successful districts have taken to increase their racially diverse teacher population and each recommendation has been accompanied by the necessary measures to replicate each step as well as any financial implications to pursuing these action steps. The most common and beneficial steps included establishing within the district, a set of core beliefs, training of administration in implicit bias and examining each practice of the hiring process.
