ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
Millennials are the next generation entering the workforce and need to be effectively molded to become future leaders. Moreover, Millennials are a different generation regarding motivations, expectations, strengths, and weaknesses brought to the workplace, which makes autocratic methods of training obsolete. The problem addressed in this study was Millennial conflict and turnover in the workplace due to misalignment of training techniques with Millennial employees who are preparing for leadership positions. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore strategies used in preparing Millennials for leadership roles while investigating perceptions of leadership and resources needed to enhance leadership capabilities. Ten current child welfare workers seeking to become leaders in the state of Georgia, between 20 and 39 years of age, with a bachelor degree and minimum of 1 year of experience were interviewed. The findings elucidated the primary strategy utilized by leaders to prepare Millennials for leadership is trainings, but these trainings are often not specific to Millennials. The findings also suggested that workers and supervisors agreed on leadership skills that they considered successful. They further indicated that being heard by leaders was important. The study led to recommendations for practice and future research. This qualitative case study contributed to understanding what strategies could be used in child welfare organizations to prepare Millennials for leadership roles. This study is beneficial to scholars and researchers because it augments existing strategies used by organizations to prepare Millennials for leadership roles. Child welfare leaders must meet the task of preparing future leaders and try to find strategies that will maintain organizational knowledge and leadership development.
