Family Voices in Two-Way Dual Language Education
Claudia Kramer Santamaria
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Texas State University - San Marcos
The Bilingual Education Act was passed in 1967, marking the beginning of bilingual education in the United States. The bilingual education models implemented by schools across the world vary in name, design, and outcomes. The focus of my study was on two-way dual language (TWDL), a bilingual model in which children of multiple languages and language proficiencies learn side-by-side with the goal of all children being bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural. I designed my qualitative phenological study to explore how 10 diverse mothers experienced the TWDL journeys of their children in a Central Texas public school district. I collected and analyzed data to uncover themes about participants' attitudes and views about language learning and what understandings the participants had about TWDL.
