Lynn Saroyan Skaff
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Pepperdine University
School Psychologists in the United States experience feelings of professional burnout due to various contributing factors. Though some School Psychologists are able to overcome these feelings of burnout and stress from the workplace, other School Psychologists continue to struggle. This study examined the best practices for managing professional burnout among School Psychologists in order to recommend and provide strategies and resources for other School Psychologists in need of support. The literature review summarized the role of a School Psychologist, job burnout, and common coping strategies. In an effort understand best practices used among practicing School Psychologists, specifically in the Los Angeles County in the State of California, the phenomenological qualitative study asked participants about their experience with job burnout, common strategies and best practices they utilize, how they determine if the strategy used was successful in overcoming professional burnout, and recommendations for other School Psychologists to prevent or overcome professional burnout. The research findings supported the literature review and resulted in implications and application for School Psychologist associations, public school districts and School Psychologists.
