Behavioral Skills Training: A Case Study on Experience and Usefulness with Staff Untrained in ABA
Amber Busay
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore how the use of behavioral skills training of behavioral interventions with staff untrained in ABA influenced participants' overall experience and indicated usefulness of the training procedure in the Northwestern portion of the United States. This study was guided by the theoretical foundation of behaviorism. The study addressed three research questions which examined how the staff untrained in ABA indicated the usefulness of behavioral skills training before and after receiving training as well as the participant's overall experience. Using a case study design, the three data sources included a semi-structured interview before and after the training, and a focus group. These three data sources were triangulated to compare and contrast the perspectives of the participants before and after the training as well as during the focus group. The results indicated six themes that were further broken down to address each research question: implementation of behavioral interventions and confidence levels addressed research question one; learning style preferences and application of skills to the natural environment addressed research question two; collaboration and maintenance and fidelity of skills addressed research question three. Participants indicated that behavioral skills training was a useful training procedure and reported an overall positive experience. Administrators in the field of education should utilize behavioral skills training when conducting trainings to ensure mastery of the information as well as staff buy in. Additional qualitative studies should be conducted using behavioral skills training to determine if similar results are found.
