The Effect of a Bully Prevention Program on Teacher Perceptions of Bullying in Elementary School: A Quasi-Experimental Study

An estimated 20% of students experience bully behaviors at least once a week, while 72% of all students have experienced or will experience bullying at some time during their schooling (Smolleck & Fryd, 2018). Bullying in schools continue to be a problem today. Evidence has shown that bully victims have effects long into adulthood. There is no hallmark method for the prevention of bullying. Education about bullying and how to recognize it, is one method that has been used in previous studies. The aim of this quasi-experimental study was to determine if the introduction of a bully prevention program to teachers in a West Texas elementary school is affective in changing the perceptions of teachers on bullying. Education was offered in a one-day workshop. The teachers were surveyed using a pre- and post-questionnaire. Approximately 30 full-time teachers participated in the study. Teachers were surveyed about their perceptions in 5 areas: 1) the teacher's perceived seriousness of the bullying situation; 2) the likeliness to intervene; 3) the ability to correctly call a situation bullying; 4) the empathy they have towards the victim; and 5) what intervention would they take in the situation utilizing the Bullying Attitudes Questionnaire--Modified by Yoon and Kerber (2003). Results indicated that there was no significance in the perceptions of teachers for seriousness, likeness to intervene, empathy, or the intervention, however, there was significant change in the ability to correctly call it bullying. Implications of this study include the development of a empathy and respect program at the school that educates teachers and students on empathy and respect for others. Future research is needed to determine if the effect of this program has more long-term results and if more participants were used, would the same outcomes occur.
