Intervention or Discipline: A Phenomenological Study of Secondary School Administrators' Responses to Student E-Cigarette Use
Mark Edward Ybarra
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
The problem of vaping, or e-cigarette use, is of epidemic proportions in secondary schools in the United States, so administrators face the daunting challenge of dealing with it on their campuses and keeping students safe, healthy, and as focused as possible on learning. To address a gap in the existing literature, this phenomenological, qualitative study sought to understand how secondary administrators in several Texas school districts responded to student e-cigarette use and their perceptions about the effects of using both discipline and intervention to curb that behavior. Eleven secondary Texas administrators from Central and East Texas school districts responded in an interview format. The research questions that guided this study centered around administrator perceptions of student e-cigarette use, the impact of disciplinary action vs. intervention to reduce that use, and influences on their decision-making process in responding to e-cigarette use by students. Future studies might experiment with specific practices for school districts seeking to reduce e-cigarette use and increase positive behavior supports.
