Who Makes It Rain? University Presidents, Social Identities, and Alumni Fundraising
Heather Makrez Allen
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Massachusetts Lowell
As universities become more diverse, competitive, and entrepreneurial, it is increasingly important to understand the impact of the president on fundraising. Research exists on the race and gender of university presidents, on their role in fundraising and their leadership traits that enable or impede fundraising (Cahill, 2003; Hodson, 2010; Kezar & Wheaton, 2017; Meindl, 2001; Sargeant & Lee, 2004; SatterWhite, 2004 Stovall, 2004; Sturgis, 2006). However, the social identities of university presidents, including race and gender, and information about the position they held immediately prior to their presidency, and their impact on fundraising are rarely included in these studies. This three-article dissertation focuses on the intersection of these traits with university revenue generation through donations. I present the following hypotheses: race, gender, and prior position of the president impact the level of alumni participation and alumni giving as percent of total giving. As my analysis finds, however, presidential race, gender, and prior position do not impact alumni participation, though prior position is a statistically significant predictor of alumni giving as a percent of total giving. I discuss the practical interpretation of these results and the implications for fundraising and demographic reporting strategies moving forward.
