Social Justice, Professional Moral Courage, and Burnout among School Counselors

School counselors working in urban populations are often exposed to stress and potential burnout. Due to the various changes in the school counseling profession and the growing needs of urban populations, school counselors are expected to be social justice advocates as well. This role potentially involves the need for the school counselor to speak up or stand against injustices inside or outside of the school. Sometimes ostracizing them from their co-workers or supervisors or potentially getting them fired due to confrontations. This study focuses on whether there is a relationship between school counselors' levels of commitment (total commitment) to social justice, level of professional moral courage, and their burnout to offer information to the growing field of school counselors for current and future counselors. In this quantitative study, 114 school counselors completed a combination of subscales from the Social Issues Questionnaire, and the entire parts of the Professional Moral Courage Survey and the Counselor's Burnout inventory. Results revealed no relationships between total commitment and moral courage, but a moderately significant relationship between total commitment and burnout with no variance added when combining moral courage in neither urban nor rural communities. Implications and recommendations for school counseling programs as well as future school counselors were also provided.
