Community College Completers: A Poetic Inquiry Exploring Black Women's Spirituality as a Factor in Student Success
Latonia Valincia Moss
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Morgan State University
Many Black women choose community colleges for their post-secondary education; however, issues of retention and persistence prevail, and many do not graduate. This study examines Black women graduates from two Mid-Atlantic community colleges who are community college completers from two institutions that historically suffered with low graduation rates. This study explores the perceptions and understandings of spirituality as an intrinsic motivator to academic success. The lived experiences of five Black women graduates are represented in poetry clusters, an art-based research (ABR) design. With spirituality at the helm of their persistence, five participants shared the intricacies of their spiritual identity along with their interlocking racial and gender identities. Spirituality was a factor in navigating what it meant to be Black women traversing various obstacles to complete their degrees. Through interviews, a focus group, and an extensive collaboration, participants' transcripts were crafted into transcription poems. The transcription poems were presented to participants, and a collaboration ensued between researcher and participants to craft the data poems represented in the findings. The findings yielded five themes: (a) spirituality in practice (b) spirituality as community/belonging (c) spirituality as intersecting identities (d) spirituality as a calling that supported the research questions. Spirituality supported the participants in their quest for completion. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
