Special Education Students' Use of Accommodations as Aligned within Individualized Education Program
Julie Anne L. Jamerson
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
Special education students are entitled to receive accommodations stipulated in their individualized education program (IEP) based on the individuals with disabilities education act (IDEA) (14 Delaware Code, §310, 2016). Although IDEA regulation does not define accommodations, accommodations are embedded within the students' IEP to provide them an opportunity to finish the same assignments as their general education peers (Lee, 2019). Action research was used in this study. Research for the study focused on special education deficits in English Language Arts (ELA). Students used accommodations, specifically Google Read&Write, aligned to their IEP during ELA. A one-page reference guide was developed for special education teachers to direct students on how to use Google Read&Write as an added accommodation to help progress through instructions with less input from teachers (Playfoot & Clark, n.d.). The findings of this study showed mixed results amongst students using Google Read&Write as an accommodation. The Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic disrupted education across the country beginning in March 2020. This study took place from October 2020 to January 2021 in the midst of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
