The Journey to the Top: Black Women's Paths to the Community College Presidency
Johari Almitra Barnes
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Morgan State University
The dearth of research on the journeys of Black women led to the desire to conduct a research project that seeks to fill a void of research on the lived experiences of racially marginalized Black women community college presidents. A qualitative multiple bounded case study design was used in this study. As the number of minority women who become community college presidents continues to increase, it is necessary to understand their journeys. Research on their journeys has implications for community college research, policy, and practice. The goal in conducting research on the journeys of Black women was to understand how various political, social, and feminist issues influenced the experiences of Black women community college presidents. Although the research set out to interview participants in all of the accreditation regions, two regions--New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) and WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUWC) are not represented. Although community college presidents were contacted in these regions and many agreed initially to contribute to the study at scheduled interview times, the presidents were not available to participate due to tremendous competing priorities. The results of the qualitative data analysis in this study found mentorship helped many of the participants overcome challenges related to their gender and race. In addition, the study will contribute to the research on Black women as educational leaders. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
