The Superintendent's Perceived Capacity to Deliver Faith Leadership and Mission Leadership to Diocesan School Communities

This study sought to identify predictive relationships between the Catholic school superintendent's life experiences, faith practices, and leadership attributes and their perceived capacity to deliver faith leadership and mission leadership. Life experiences include superintendents' religious formation, work experience, and leadership preparation. Using behaviors from instruments developed by Ciriello (1996), Cook and Durow (2008), and Ozar and Weitzel-O'Neill (2012), a survey was created and first piloted with Catholic school assistant superintendents. The survey was then emailed to 170 diocesan superintendents in the United States. One hundred fifteen superintendents anonymously and voluntarily provided insights into their religious formation, work experience, leadership preparation, faith practices, and leadership attributes. These were compared to the participants' reported faith leadership and mission leadership behaviors. Qualitative data were collected through two open-ended response items presented only to participants who perceived a difference between faith and mission leadership. These data were analyzed through constant coding to produce foundational definitions for faith leadership and mission leadership. Statistical analyses revealed that individual life experiences are predictors of items within faith leadership and mission leadership. They include being formed for religious life, engaging in faith-based activities, securing advanced degrees from a Catholic institution, superintendents without corporate experience, and the age and sex of the superintendent. The six faith practices and nine leadership attributes all predict faith leadership and mission leadership. Individual items within the practices and attributes also predict faith and mission behaviors. The faith practices include reading Church documents, articulating Church teachings, nurturing one's relationship with God, and praying daily. The attributes include having mindfulness of ministry, an ability to inspire, and an entrepreneurial spirit. Qualitative analyses of responses revealed behaviors associated with faith leadership are inward behaviors such as prayer, modeling the faith, and participating in the rites and rituals of the Church. Mission leadership included outward behaviors focused on relationships and evangelization, purpose and mission. This study offers the literature a distinct definition for faith leadership and mission leadership as they pertain to Catholic school leadership. Faith leadership, often used interchangeably with spiritual leadership, currently exists in the literature, but this study introduces mission leadership as a particular brand of leadership in the realm of Catholic education, one that complements faith leadership.
