Positive Lifestyle Design and Its Effect on Teacher Burnout and Absenteeism
Michael K. Costill
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are rising in the United States which impacts families, workplaces, and education settings. In an effort to combat this problem, private businesses are investing in their employee's wellness to save the organization money in the future. The increase of NCDs is impacting every school nationwide and this epidemic must be addressed by each school district. In addition, with the increase of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) there is perturbation that teachers are experiencing burnout. Districts can address the problem through incorporating relevant wellness professional development focusing on physical health and mindfulness to teachers. The incorporation of a wellness program focused on strong self-care and awareness will improve the health of teachers which will decrease burn out, absenteeism, and finally increase student achievement through a "ripple effect." Ultimately, a teacher wellness program will allow teachers and students to flourish academically, socially, emotional, and physically.
