ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Phoenix
The purpose of the qualitative exploratory case study was to examine California community college administrators' perceptions of preparation for achieving full compliance in implementing California Assembly Bill (AB) No. 705. The study involved analyzing documents, a physical artifact, and archived data from 14 community colleges in southern California. Five themes emerged to support the two research questions of the study: What were the California community college math administrators' perceptions of supporting students and faculty to achieve implementation of/compliance with AB 705 at 14 community colleges in an urban county in southern California? and What were the perceptions of the California community college math administrators' preparation in the resources and curriculum to achieve implementation of/compliance with AB 705 at 14 community colleges in an urban county in southern California? The five emergent themes were (a) changes were made to the curriculum to meet AB 705 requirements, (b) the development of a guided self-placement tool to place students properly to meet AB 705 requirements, (c) identified institutional changes to support math faculty to meet AB 705 requirements, (d) identified institutional changes to support math students to comply with AB 705 requirements, and (e) identified other resources college math administrators requested to comply with AB 705. The study findings revealed a need for support and resources to develop the curriculum, support professional development and training, and develop student placement tools. This study also added to the existing research body by finding a need for professional development and training for mathematics nonacademic employees.
