Supporting Cyber Students through a Student-Centered Advisory Program
Callie Allison Gaylord
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
Current research suggests that students fare better in school, especially in areas of engagement and attendance, when they have supportive adult-student relationships. As many educators learned during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, extra efforts are needed to build these supportive relationships when teaching and learning in online environments. Full time cyber charter schools need to be aware of this challenge and need to make conscious efforts to create opportunities to build these relationships for their students. This study focused on a targeted improvement change at Joyce Williams Cyber Charter School*. A review of the literature led to suggestions for Joyce Williams Cyber Charter which included a piloted Advisory course which offered more frequent Advisory meetings, as well as a social and emotional learning curriculum for a small group of ninth-grade students. The goal of the pilot program was to increase engagement, as measured by attendance, and achievement, as measured by course grades. This study describes the piloted curriculum as well as some resources used in its creation. Post-study comparative data analyses indicated the program made a statistically significant impact on attendance of the pilot group. The analyses also indicated there was a statistically significant increase in overall course grades. Recommendations that resulted from this study included incorporating a weekly, student-centered Advisory program for all ninth-grade students. The program should include social and emotional lessons that encourage discussions and personal growth reinforcement. The program should also include topics and lessons that can build skills which help students transition to high school and maneuver in the world around them: communication skills, knowledge of resources and norms, and organizational strategies.
