Improving Biblical Literacy through the Implementation of the "Knowing Your Bible" Curriculum in a Pilot Small Group in First Baptist Church Spavinaw, Oklahoma
Daniel Scott Wengerd
ProQuest LLC, D.Min. Dissertation, South University
The Christian Church has always considered the Bible to be the Word of God, a collection of ancient documents that were inspired by God and communicate the teachings of God for His people. While it is essential for Christians to understand the truths contained therein, it has been well documented that biblical literacy among Christians in America is on the decline. While many of the people who attend First Baptist Church, Spavinaw have been attending church for years, they do not have a good understanding of the Bible, neither foundational content nor foundational methods of interpretation. They have expressed a love of God's Word and believe that it is essential for living a life that pleases God but have not had instruction regarding the foundational elements of the Bible. "Thesis Statement": The pilot small group at First Baptist Church, Spavinaw, will demonstrate improved Biblical literacy characterized by an increased understanding of the Bible's essential themes following the implementation of the "Knowing Your Bible" curriculum. The "Knowing Your Bible" curriculum is a ten-session study designed for small groups which teaches an overview of the Bible. Participants of the study learned who wrote each book and the audience to whom they wrote, the main concepts communicated, and basic methods of biblical interpretation. This was intended to establish a good framework and foundation upon which to build further understanding of the Word of God. In order to ascertain biblical literacy achieved during the study, a pre-test was administered to each participant to determine a baseline at the beginning of the first session, and a post-test was administered at the study's conclusion. The results of the post-tests were compared to those of the pre-test to determine the extent to which biblical literacy had improved. It was determined at the end of the study that the participants improved their biblical literacy. This project will serve as a pilot study that can be duplicated in the future with other participants in First Baptist Church, Spavinaw, and can also be used in other churches in our association as well.
