Improving Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Intent through a Web-Based Educational Intervention

ProQuest LLC, D.N.P. Dissertation, Brandman University
The human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most prevalent sexually transmitted infection in the United States. Annually, in the U.S., there are over 27,000 individuals diagnosed with cancers that are caused by the human papillomavirus. The total health care cost related to cervical cancer alone in the U.S. is $3.7 billion (Thomas, 2016). The HPV vaccine is 97% effective in preventing cancer caused by HPV infections (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2016). Despite the vaccine's effectiveness in preventing HPV infections and cancer, vaccination rates in the US are below recommendation. Current research, in the U.S., has identified knowledge deficits as a significant barrier in HPV vaccination compliance among parents. The focus of this research is to identify and develop evidence based educational interventions to improve vaccination intent and compliance. Innovative, resourceful, and effective methods to educate parents about HPV vaccinations and HPV infection risks are necessary to improve HPV vaccination intent and compliance in the U.S. The implementation of a peer to peer web based educational interventions is a cost-effective method to improve HPV vaccination outcomes.
