"Difficult Roads Lead to Beautiful Places": Newcomer Youth and Caregiver Experiences in U.S. Elementary Schools
Kirsten Abel
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, The University of North Carolina at Wilmington
Newcomers bring a range of languages, cultures, school experiences, and literacy skills to classrooms, yet existing literature examines newcomers' experiences from the perspective of teachers and school personnel. Some studies widen the lens in which they do research and elicit the voices of newcomer adolescents; however, very few studies seek to include the voices of elementary age students. Narrative inquiry is a way of understanding experience; therefore, through the voices of newcomer students and their caregivers, this study provides a lens in which they view their experiences in U.S. elementary schools. Data collection methods included phenomenological interviews and visual research methods. A close look at their stories, experiences, and visual representations revealed perspectives from two lenses; newcomer students and their caregivers. Newcomer students described the importance of friendships, relationships with their teachers, and the value they place on non-instructional activities, lunch and recess. Students also described their experiences with the process of identity acculturation as they navigated a new language and culture. Newcomer caregivers' stories revealed they immigrated to the U.S. for educational and professional opportunities as well as family well-being. Caregivers described the importance of finding their culture of origin within a new community and society. Close examination of the definition of "newcomer" provided by newcomer caregivers revealed there is not a "one size fits all" timeline or definition, and many factors must be considered such as existing systems of support, language, and each family's unique individual circumstances. The narratives presented may guide educators and policymakers to determine systems of support for newcomer families and culturally relevant teaching practices that benefit students.
