Religious Support and Emotional Functioning in Catholic versus Protestant Undergraduate Students

Religious support has consistently been linked with better psychological functioning. The Multi-Faith Religious Support Scale (MFRSS; Bjorck & Maslim, 2011) is one measure used to assess such support, but to date, no one has assessed denominational differences using this scale. I compared Catholics and Protestants in this study regarding the associations between their religious support and emotional functioning. I used archival data from a sample of Catholic and Protestant students at a university in Alabama (N = 261) who completed an online survey for class credit. Factor analysis of the MFRSS yielded a two-factor structure: Religious Community Support (RCS) and God Support (GS). Scales based on these factors were correlated with satisfaction with life for the entire sample. Additionally, for Protestants, both scales also significantly correlated inversely with depression and PTSD. Moreover, Protestant findings remained significant even when controlling for religious commitment. Additionally, after controlling for religious commitment, religious group interacted with both RCS and GS regarding PTSD. In both cases, PTSD symptoms decreased with increasing religious support for Protestants, whereas the reverse was true for Catholics.
