Identifying Campus Locations' Contributions to the Perception of Safety
Michael Dwayne Birmingham Sr.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Chicago
Violence on college campuses has occurred too often in the United States, thus requiring a review of factors that contribute to the occurrence of violent incidents; whether this includes specific locations and time of day or what feelings or emotions are experienced as a result by stakeholders. This study provides insight into questions such as, What are perceptions of safety on college campuses?, What are the perceptions of students, faculty, and staff on what locations are safer than others?, and What are the perceptions of students, faculty, and staff on factors that contribute to feeling that some locations are safer than others? This study utilizes two foundational theories as a guide: (a) Rational Choice Theory and (b) Deviant Place Theory; of which each contribute to a better understanding regarding perceived fear in public spaces and human behaviour in such settings. A basic qualitative case study methodology was utilized as it better provides perceptions based on individual experiences and beliefs. Data was obtained from students, faculty, and staff at a Mid-South University who provided insight through open-ended and photo questionnaires. The results of the study provided themes that contribute to the perceptions of stakeholders about being in specific locations during various hours. This study provides sufficient feedback to stimulate social change individually, organizationally, societally, and at the policy level.
