Variables of Success in Mississippi Allied Health Education: An Ex Post Facto Study of Results from 2012-2017
Michael Eric Williams
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Delta State University
Allied Health students enrolled in Career and Technical Education, CTE, programs in the State of Mississippi exhibit one of the lowest rates of first-time pass performance on their certification examinations in the United States. The purpose of this research was to determine if any proposed metrics are statistically significant in predicting the probability of a student passing the relevant examination on the first attempt. The researcher hypothesized that the outcome of the test is potentially predictable when considering the age of the student, the gender identification of the student, and the mean teaching experience of the cohort faculty members. This investigation selected Emergency Medical Technology, Licensed Practical Nursing, and X-Ray Technology to represent Allied Health CTE. Binary logistical regression was used by the analyst to evaluate the population of students enrolled in EMT, LPN, and XRT programs from 2012-2017 at a Mississippi community college. A total of 407 cases comprised the sample. Results suggested that the age of the students (p = 0.006) and the mean teaching experience of the faculty members (p = 0.003) were statistically significant in predicting the probability of observing a pass on the certification examination on the first attempt. On this basis, the researcher recommends an increased focus on adult-learner theory application in instruction and a redesign of the current new Allied Health CTE faculty training process.
