Exploring Video-Assisted Technology Use: A Qualitative Multi-Case Study
Cheryl M. Miller
ProQuest LLC, EDD/ET Dissertation, University of Phoenix
Best practices for video-assisted debriefing (VAD) technology use cannot be developed because the characteristics of VAD that lead to successful debriefing have not been identified. The purpose of this qualitative, multiple-case study with embedded units sought to employ observation, participant interviews, and documentation review in exploring and describing practices of VAD used in neonatal resuscitation program (NRP) education. The population of instructors and learners came from three United States case hospitals. The sample size included 14 instructors and 44 learners. The Braun and Clarke method of thematic analysis was applied to the data. Seven themes were revealed: (Theme 1) Most successful use of VAD practices already implemented by the three sites. (Theme 2) Practices identified for improvement related to instructor use of the technology. (Theme 3) VAD is a good tool for review and observation by learners and instructors. (Theme 4) Undertones of emotion identified as fear of video sharing, failure, and sabotage. (Theme 5) Emotion in instructors reflect fear of training gap and technology issues. (Theme 6) Participants identified VAD was effective in meeting the NRP learning outcomes. (Theme 7) Technology issues are the most common improvement that could be made to VAD. Leaders in simulation centers can affect improvement in the safe use of VAD technology at their centers by applying the recommendations of this study.
