Community College Practices Regarding the Collection of LGBTQ+ Student Information
Kurt B. Doan
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
Although the body of research about LGBTQ+ students in higher education is growing, little is known about the experiences, success rates, persistence, and graduation rates of sexual minority community college students. Researchers studying this population frequently cite a lack of available data that would assist in exploring the experiences of LGBTQ+ community college students. National surveys of community college students infrequently collect sexual orientation and non-binary gender identity demographic information. Similarly, it is unclear how many community colleges collect this same demographic information. The purpose of this study was to understand the degree to which American community colleges collected LGBTQ+ demographic information from students and the barriers that exist for community colleges that currently do not collect sexual orientation or non-binary gender identity data. Over 1,000 community college registrars were surveyed for this study during the fall of 2020. Only 26.8% of community colleges surveyed collected student sexual orientation data, while 34.2% collected student gender identity data. Participants identified four key barriers that prevented the collection of SOGI data: A lack of policy, issues with the college's student information system, concerns about student privacy and/or safety, and concerns about government reporting. This study includes recommendations for higher education leaders and LGBTQ+ allies, and also outlines opportunities for future research.
