A Narrative Inquiry Study of the Leadership Pathways of NCAA Division III Female Collegiate Athletic Administrators
Elisa Van Kirk
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
This study used a narrative inquiry approach to explore how female athletic administrators who were previously coaches described their lived experiences as they navigated their careers to ascend to athletic administration positions at NCAA Division III schools. The study used the theoretical framework of social cognitive career theory, which focuses on career options, performance, and future pursuits of an individual in career development (Lent et al., 1994). The findings of the study demonstrated the importance of coaching experience, external influences, such as mentors, networks, educational opportunities, and terminal degrees. The study participants experienced a progressing nature of the male-dominated environment of collegiate athletics as they navigated relationships with men and used proactive, optimistic and confident leadership behaviors to ascend into administration. Based on the participants' stories, the findings may provide information about how women at the Division III level were able to navigate their careers to become athletic administrators.
