An Exploration of School Counselors' Experiences with Asian American Youth: Implications on Mental Health
Jenny Kim
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
This generic qualitative study explored how school counselors describe their experiences providing school-based mental health services (SBMHSs) to Asian American youth to understand factors that may hinder or facilitate school counselors' work with this population (J. Kim et al., 2021). The real-life experiences of school counselors were explored through the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies (MSJCC) framework to understand their beliefs and actions in hopes of contributing to the literature on school counselors providing services to Asian American youth (Ratts et al., 2016). The need for this study is reinforced by its potential impact on Counselor Education and Supervision to inform the multicultural and social justice competence lens within school counselor trainees and to capture information about these experiences unique to the qualitative form of this study (Brown & Shin, 2020; J. Kim et al., 2021). Moreover, the results of this study could aid in expanding the perspective of school support within Asian American communities (Arora & Khoo, 2020; J. Guo et al., 2023; Harris et al., 2019). Findings of this study include school counselors' competencies informed by the MSJCC framework in their work with Asian American youth and the need for the MSJCC within school counseling.
