Principals' Self-Perception of Resilience: A Mixed Method Study on Wellness
Michelle Colleen Benjamin
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Niagara University
This study used a convergent (QUAL + quan) mixed method design that addressed the theoretically-relevant but empirically-understudied topics of principal resilience and wellness. The study sample was 77 principals/vice-principals, 57 of whom were Canadian and 20 of whom were American. The purpose of the study was two-fold: to comprehensively examine how (qualitatively) and if (quantitatively) principal resilience was associated with six dimensions of wellness. The qualitative research question inquired as to how principals experienced resilience within the school context of wellness, using a multi-site case study research design. The researcher assessed data gathered from semi-structured interviews conducted with 10 participants (five American and five Canadian) as well as responses to open-ended survey questions. A correlation research design was used to examine the quantitative research question about relationships between principal's self-reported resilience and six dimensions of wellness. A series of linear regression models were conducted using data from the American and Canadian participants as well as a subset of 40 participants. Analysis of qualitative data yielded six themes: (a) personal wellness practices and activities; (b) professional goals and objectives; (c) school practices for wellness; (d) wellness and school staff; and (e) challenges and school barriers. Quantitative analyses revealed that resilience was significantly associated with emotional wellness Canadian but not American participants. Additionally, spiritual wellness was significantly higher among Canadian as opposed to American participants with more as opposed to and fewer years of experience. Implications of this study are discussed. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC. Further reproduction is prohibited without permission.
