ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
This action research study investigated the impact of islamophobia on Muslim American women college students and aimed to improve their experiences as they navigate academia. Participants in Cycle 1 were Muslim American women enrolled in colleges across the Northeast region of the United States. Data were collected through interviews and surveys to explore their experiences with identity, college experiences, and coping strategies. Cycle 2 action steps were constructed, implemented, and assessed to address Muslim American women students' needs. Three healing circles were collaboratively constructed to address the academic and social challenges they confronted and created spaces that fostered healing, belonging, and agency. These steps included organizing faith-centered healing circles. The findings revealed three key results: (a) Muslim women students confront challenges related to identity and belonging, (b) spiritual activism serves as a coping mechanism, and (c) collective care is a vital coping practice. The research demonstrated the importance of integrating institutions and inclusive policies that address the specific challenges Muslim American women students face. It emphasized the need to create support systems such as healing circles, mentorship, and outreach programs that promote dialogue. These steps can lead to more welcoming and empowering academic spaces where Muslim women feel valued and supported.
