The Examination of the Moderating Role of Resilience in the Relationship between Personal, Social, and Academic Factors on Academic Success among Doctor of Physical Therapy Students: A Mixed-Methods Approach
Ashanti Marie Franklin Jones
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Louisiana at Monroe
This mixed-methods study examined the moderating role of resilience in the relationship between personal, social, and academic factors and academic success, as measured by grade point average (GPA) among Doctor of Physical Therapy students. It aimed to identify the strongest predictor of GPA among self-efficacy, friends and family support, and the use of a problem-based instructional model and explore how resilience may moderate these relationships. Additionally, the researcher uncovered factors perceived to enhance resilience levels among DPT student participants. Quantitative data from surveys were analyzed using Pearson correlations and multiple regression to identify predictors of GPA and associations with resilience. Qualitative insights were obtained from focus groups, providing a deeper understanding of the factors that influence resilience. The friends and family support were found to be the stronger predictor of GPA (r = -0.354, n = 40, p = 0.025). There was a strong, positive correlation between resilience and self-efficacy that was statistically significant (r = 0.641, n = 40, p = <0.001). There was no statistically significant association between friends and family support and resilience (p = 0.121) or the use of a problem-based instructional model (p = 0.063); therefore, a moderator analysis was no longer warranted. The qualitative findings found that there were internal and external factors that contributed to the high resilience levels of DPT student participants. The internal factors included a positive/growth mindset, setting goals, and adaptability. The external factors were peer support and positive support from family and friends. This research is significant as it will help inform holistic admission processes, DPT accreditation practices, and assist programs in producing graduates that will meet the physical therapy workforce needs.
