Tiffany Jefferson
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, Jackson State University
This qualitative phenomenological study thoroughly examines an art collective network within Mississippi's community colleges, specifically focusing on enhancing career preparation for students seeking opportunities in the entertainment industry. Through semi-structured interviews, this study gathered data from a purposive sample of six current employees of Mississippi community colleges, holding positions in career and technical education coordination, performing arts administration, or chairperson roles. The findings of this study reveal four key themes: (a) A disconnect between academic and entertainment industries, highlighting the need for greater collaboration and communication between these two sectors. (b) A need for stakeholder enlightenment regarding art education's diverse career pathways, emphasizing the importance of raising awareness about the various career opportunities available to students. (c) A requirement for a multifaceted approach to arts education and talent development underscores the need for a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to preparing students for careers in the entertainment industry. (d) The importance of adequate infrastructure and facilities for performance arts education, highlighting the significance of providing students with access to state-of-the-art resources and facilities. This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by amplifying the voices of career technical education coordinators, performing arts instructors, and administrators, and highlighting the need for unwavering advocacy and support for the performing arts. The findings of this study underscore the significance of a collective effort from stakeholders to foster a conducive learning environment, ultimately enriching the entertainment industry in Mississippi.
