Strategies Used in Socio-Sexual Education Programs to Teach Empathy Expression Skills for Positive Intimacy to People with Autism Spectrum Disorder

The present study explored strategies teachers use to help people with ASD develop sociosexual skills for empathy expression. Previous research found the curriculum for people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) does not always include strategies to teach the socio-sexual skills required for empathy expression. This qualitative descriptive study used social cognitive theory as the theoretical framework. Eight participants with teaching experience in programs that include people with ASD were selected using purposive sampling. Data collected through semi-structured interviews and document reviews of lesson plans were analyzed through a combination of thematic and content analysis with NVivo software. The study found teachers engage in flexible use of practical and relevant strategies to teach competencies in socio-sexual skills used for empathy expression and that teachers used strategies that engaged students with ASD in activities that provided the self and other awareness and social communication skills used to experience, practice, and engage in the desired empathy expression skills. The implication from the findings is that student assessments can be challenging when teachers do not follow curriculum or lesson plans, resulting in three recommendations for practice: teachers should have access to professional development to learn research-based strategies specific to teaching people with ASD, support is integrated into the teaching environment, and curriculum is designed with the flexibility to adapt strategies as determined by the teacher. Future research will benefit from a quantitative study into the efficacy of the strategies identified, and a case study approach with curriculum as the bounded system.
