Burnout among educators has been a growing concern in the field of education. Although there has been much research into the factors causing educators, there has been limited research into causes of burnout specifically for the midlevel school leaders such as assistant principals, instructional coaches, and school deans. This study sought to explore the factors causing burnout amongst midlevel school leaders in my school district and identify ways to prevent or alleviate it. I used a mixed methods design approach to collect and analyze data for this study. Participants were asked to complete the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educators Survey (MBI-ES) and the Areas of Worklife Survey (AWS). The qualitative data I collected was through a counter storytelling approach by conducting a focus group with former and current midlevel leaders within my school district. While the data from the MBI-ES and the AWS highlighted specific areas of burnout within our district, the counter narratives of the participants allowed me to share a comprehensive perspective of the lived experiences of the midlevel leaders within our district. The data collected from the surveys and counter narratives was used to craft an action plan to address burnout within our midlevel leaders. The Leaders for Elevation, Advancement and Development (LEAD) Initiative focuses on creating organizational systems that will allow midlevel leaders to share in key decision-making through providing feedback to the district about concerns and improvement for their roles. In addition, the LEAD Initiative will allow midlevel leaders to receive role specific monthly professional development geared to improving their professional practices and providing peer support. Since research for midlevel leaders is still emerging, my research process and subsequent action plan can support organizations who are looking to improve working conditions for their midlevel leaders and by creating awareness of these conditions.
