A School Environment Meeting the Needs of the Complex Neurodiverse Student
Dana M. Judd
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Dallas Baptist University
The current case study examined the effects of a specialized private Christian school for neurodiverse learning-disabled students. Research supports the creation of an educational environment that meets not only the academic needs of these diverse learners but also prioritizes creating a safe social-emotional place for learning. Further, the study investigated the effect of emotional support dogs and the priority to have school counselors trained in the emotional components present in neurodiverse learning-disabled students. A qualitative case study of Inspire Academy was the focus of the research included in this study. One-on-one interviews were conducted with three participant groups, including neurodiverse students, parents of neurodiverse students, and teachers and staff who work with neurodiverse students and families. Data was assessed through the ATLAS.ti qualitative software program where several overlapping themes were discovered. The case study results confirmed an environment safe for learning includes a tone of acceptance and a supportive environment of relaxation, comfort, and stress relief. The influence of a Christian environment incorporating Christian teachings and principles creates an environment conducive to creating a positive, safe learning experience, which enhanced the results of the study by providing an inclusive and empowering setting that included relaxation and comfort, a supportive environment, and religious aspects.
