ProQuest LLC, Ed.D./HE Dissertation, Azusa Pacific University
This action research study examined student success at a private, faith-based graduate business school by aiming to cultivate a community of belonging for graduate students through a staff development approach. As the action for this study, a three-part professional development series was created to foster a collaborative community of graduate student service practitioners and develop their ability to cultivate a community of belonging for graduate business students through their professional practice. Qualitative data were collected from multiple sources before, during, and after the action to understand the influence of the action on participants' learning, practice, perceptions, and connections with other practitioners. Findings revealed participants (a) increased their learning and professional growth, (b) increased their feelings of connection to other participants, (c) used common strategies to cultivate a community of belonging for graduate students, and (d) possessed a strong desire to build on the professional development series through further learning, connection, and collaboration opportunities. Recommendations for policy and practice for graduate education leaders include (a) fostering a culture of community in policy and practice, (b) expanding practitioners' professional development, and (c) creating a practitioner community of practice.
