Expansion of STEM Seminar Programs to Underserved Rural Appalachian High School Students
Alan A. Tomson
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
The purpose of this Action Research project was to understand the educational needs of the underserved communities in rural Appalachia and to significantly enhance the fairness of currently limited access to Mountain Institute STEM Academy (MISA) STEM seminar programs. Cycle 1 research was conducted with STEM faculty from two rural Appalachian high schools. The findings demonstrated a need for additional technology-based STEM education materials to be available to support underserved rural high schools. The educational materials considered for this project were the MISA STEM seminar presentations delivered at the annual MISA summer STEM Camp. For Cycle 2, new research questions and action steps were developed to inform the research in producing STEM seminar videos that, via the MISA website, would be available to high school faculty in a rural Appalachian state. The research produced multiple cycles, and each of the earlier cycles informed subsequent research that led to the development of the STEM seminar videos. Action steps involved various stakeholders, collaborators, and participants, each of whom had an integral role in evaluating the educational materials and producing the STEM seminar videos. The Cycle 2 results indicated that the MISA STEM Camp seminar presentations and the follow-on STEM videos were highly informative and sought after by the faculty members who evaluated the content. The findings guided the researcher in developing and positioning the future dissemination of the STEM seminar videos to rural Appalachian high schools and their students.
