Lifelong Learning for Senior Citizens in Thailand
Archanya Ratana-Ubol
Education in the Asia-Pacific Region: Issues, Concerns and Prospects
In Thailand, as in other countries, it is important for senior citizens to be active in learning activities because of the numerous benefits which accrue to the individual, family, community and society. In addition, they are setting the example for the younger generations. They are the promoters of the culture and local wisdom. They need the support of their family, caregivers and social support systems. In the twilight years of life, having care and assistance in their activities of daily living is especially important spiritually. Society and communities should become more involved with the activities of the well-being of their citizens, promoting the understanding of and needs of especially the senior citizens, by minimising their dependence on the government for their well-being and also creating special spaces and infrastructure to promote the lifelong learning for all.
