A Constellation of Stories: Liminality and Transition in the Experiences of Graduate Student Instructors
Ashleah Wimberly
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, The Florida State University
My dissertation is a project that gives voice to marginalized graduate instructors in the fields of Rhetoric, Composition, Writing Studies, and Linguistics by exploring their diverse literacy practices and experiences. Using semi-structured interviews informed by decolonial and anti-racist methodologies, I collected critical incidents from 27 graduate students who self-identify as embodying subject positions typically overlooked or marginalized within their fields. Their critical incident narratives highlight the memorable moments and encounters that have influenced their development as learners, researchers, and professionals. The stories collected through my research offer insight into how our current disciplinary and programmatic practices influence their experiences inside and outside the institution. In this way, my project contributes to ongoing conversations surrounding anti-racist, decolonial research methodologies and equitable labor practices, exploring ways to increase access, inclusion, and diversity.
