A Qualitative Descriptive Study: The Influence of Pastoral Transformational Leadership
Janice Denice Stewart
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how church members describe the influence of pastoral transformational leadership to achieve the church's organizational vision and goals. The theoretical foundation for this study was Bernard Bass' (1985) transformational leadership theory. The research was guided by four questions, each developed to align with one of the four components of transformational leadership. The study's results were derived from data gathered through semi-structured individual interviews and a focus group session. The data was analyzed and processed utilizing Braun and Clarke's (2006) six-phase thematic analysis, generating 11 theme: provides support through encouragement, ministries, and resources, provides encouragement through sermons and Bible teachings to live a new life in Christ and explore new opportunities, taught to apply the word of God as the guiding principle for problem-solving, encourages community by building relationships, members are empowered to grow in their faith through the preaching and teaching of the Word of God, members are supported by providing their spiritual, physical, financial, and emotional needs, pastors demonstrate integrity and Bible-based leadership, pastors serve as role models to the church and the community, the vision is continuously communicated, pastors communicate the vision by how they live and serve, pastors help to develop a sense of purpose and belonging. The results reveal that pastoral transformational leadership influences the achievement of the vision and goals of the church.
