ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Marymount University
School principals provide guidance to schools and educators, a role which is vital in education. The challenges brought by COVID 19 in education, such as academic setbacks and emotional obstacles for students, underscore the importance of principals' leadership skills. Principals manage school operations and play a crucial role in setting goals, policies, and vision for their institutions. Principals' leadership effectiveness is crucial for schools to succeed across all areas. However, developing leadership skills is a process that can be complex at times. This qualitative descriptive study was conducted to explore how personal life experiences shape and contribute to the educational leadership skills and identity of pre-K-12 school leaders within a public school district in Delaware. Acknowledging that formal professional training is not the only way to develop leadership skills, this research examined how life experiences, cultural backgrounds, and past work situations impact leadership abilities. These life encounters serve as foundations for developing principals' leadership skills and identity. This research contributes to bringing about educational change through an exploration of scholarly inquiry into the influence of life experience on leaders' character traits and career acumen, culminating in a description of the life experiences that have influenced the leadership skills and identity of school administrators in a selected public school district in the state of Delaware. Findings uncovered the impact of life experiences on enhancing educational leadership abilities and identity, offering insights into the role of life experiences in shaping principals' leadership style. Results of this study may benefit the development programs and selection processes for educational leadership.
