Employee Absenteeism: A Summary of Research. ERS Research Brief
Paul J. Porwoll
Online Submission
The purpose of this report is to provide a comprehensive review of research on employee absenteeism conducted on both educational and noneducational personnel. Although the report focuses primarily on the absences of educational employees, comparatively little research has been reported on this topic in the published educational literature. Research findings from business, private industry, and government service are included so that school boards and their management teams would have the opportunity to draw upon the experience of as many sources as possible in their efforts to solve problems pertaining to staff absenteeism. Current status and trend data are discussed. Major factors influencing employee absenteeism are analyzed, such as the relationship between absenteeism and personal, organizational, and time-place factors, and how absenteeism affects job satisfaction and turnover. Recommendations from the literature on controlling employee absenteeism are provided. Costs associated with staff absenteeism are discussed, and conclusions from the literature offered for school policy makers. Data in 35 tables, six figures, and five forms are included.
