Her Mind Is of Her Own, She Cannot Fail; Exploring the Experience of Black Undergraduate Women in Women's Studies
J. Bernard Green Jr.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Georgia
Research is needed for us to be able to understand how Women of Color make meaning of their experiences in women's studies, especially Black women, whose experiences have not always been centered within women's studies (Elfman, 2009). Furthermore, it is important to distinguish Women of Color from Black women when investigating their lived experiences (Porter & Dean, 2015). Considering the exclusion of Black women in the first wave of feminism, racial inequalities Black undergraduate students encounter at predominately white institutions (PWIs), understanding the connectedness of gender and race of undergraduate Black women in women's studies is a worthy topic to explore. This qualitative study sought to understand Black undergraduate women's experiences in women's studies at PWIs. In this qualitative study, I employed narrative inquiry to help explain what Black undergraduate women experience at PWIs.
