Staff Perception of a Virtual Setting for the Behavioral Intervention Check-In/Check-Out
LaFrance Marie Knox
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology
Authentic connections and experiences frequently occur between students, educational material, peers, and staff. Staff set the climate and culture of the classroom and impact the academic, behavioral, social, and emotional achievement of students. To support students behaviorally and academically, schools across the United States have created a system of support called the Multi-Tiered System of Support for Academics and Behavior. While systems of support for academics have been thoroughly researched and developed, those for behavior are still being developed and adapted. One Tier of intervention that is being developed and researched is Tier 2. An intervention within Tier 2 being researched and adapted to resolve any issues is Check-In/Check-Out. Currently, issues that have been identified include lack of time and personnel in schools. Knowing the current issues with the behavioral intervention Check-In/Check-Out, it is key to analyze a potential way to resolve the issue of time and personnel factors. Therefore, the current research was conducted to determine if the virtual setting is an appropriate setting to resolve the issue of time and lack of personnel for the intervention Check-In/Check-Out. Results of the analysis of the data indicated that the staff perceived the virtual setting as a setting that improves the relationship between staff and student, encourages accountability from staff and students, and improves issues with staff shortages and lack of time. An analysis of the data also indicated that the staff perceived the efficiency of utilizing the virtual setting being impacted by the accessibility of technology, time management skills, and staff-shortage issues.
