The Experiences of Female Students of Color with Technology in a Post High School STEM Program: A Phenomenological Research Study
Melissa Radhay
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology
Technology has crossed over into virtually all aspects of modern life. As a result, there has been a growing emphasis on cultivating a skilled workforce within Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) sectors. However, there continues to be a disparity in the representation of women of color within STEM fields. This study utilized a hermeneutic phenomenological methodology to explore the experience of female students of color with technology in a post high school STEM program. Guided by Social Cognitive Career Theory, the study identified six themes and one subtheme through thematic data analysis. These themes include utilization of technology for education; subtheme challenges with technology in STEM; addressing challenges, promoting diversity, and enhancing support systems for women in STEM; impact of cultural background on technology use; future goals and professional aspirations; personal growth and resilience; and early experiences with technology. While the participants felt a sense of empowerment with technology, they also expressed challenges unique to women in a STEM.
