The Transition to Practice Experience in a Post Pandemic Health Care Environment for Gen Z Nursing Graduates
Shelley Spencer von der Lancken
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Saint Louis University
The post pandemic environment presents challenges not realized in Duchscher's transition theory. The post pandemic environment finds nurses in emotional, physical, and moral distress (Maben & Bridges, 2020). Stress and depression have led to increasing rates of burnout among nursing staff (Bouza et al., 2023). Burnout and disengagement lead to additional turnover and lower morale in remaining nursing staff (Lagasse, 2021). There is little research on the graduate transition experience in a post COVID 19 health care environment. A better understanding of the transition process may support the development of best practices to transform curricula, improve the transition experience, graduate wellbeing, and reduce burnout to enhance the personal and professional lives of Gen Z nursing graduates (Cartwright-Stroupe & Shinners,2021; Di Mattio & Hudacek, 2020; Serafin et al., 2020).
