ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, National University
In this qualitative study the researcher examined the lived experiences of school leaders in the south-central region of the United Stated in developing a school's climate and culture post-pandemic. The problem addressed in this study is the decline of positive school climate and culture post-pandemic, resulting in the need to support students' and staff's emotional well-being. The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe the lived experiences of school leaders in the south-central region and identify strategies that improved school climate and culture. The conceptual framework for this study was the job demand resource model. The sample used were school leaders in a large urban district in the south-central United States. The district consists of 33 elementary schools, 12 middle schools, eight high schools, four alternative schools, and six charter schools. The district employs nearly 200 building administrator and serves over 34,000 students from a diverse background. Nine school administrators participated in one-on-one interviews and a focus group that was conducted through Google Meet, transcribed, and reviewed by participants before thematic analysis was conducted. The study concluded that social and emotional learning (SEL) strategies effectively created a positive school climate and culture post-pandemic. The recommendations for practice included involving state agencies to assist in providing SEL curriculum and incentives for school districts to support SEL, school leaders developing their SEL capacities, and implementing SEL initiatives on a school-wide level. Additionally, further research should study the findings in other regions of the country in rural or smaller school districts.
