Thekreyt A. Alseef
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Morgan State University
This study delves into the experiences of Saudi graduate students navigating mental health challenges while pursuing higher education in the United States. As a result of cultural and academic pressures, these students grapple with various stressors, including cultural adaptation, academic demands, and familial separation. The research aims to identify the factors influencing the onset of mental health issues and the coping mechanisms employed by Saudi students. Grounded in a phenomenological framework, the qualitative inquiry involves in-depth interviews with purposively selected participants who have firsthand experiences with mental health challenges. Through a nuanced exploration of participants' narratives, the study seeks to uncover the complex interplay of cultural, familial, academic, and individual factors shaping their mental health experiences. Positionality is crucial in this research, as the researcher shares a common cultural background with the participants, providing valuable insider perspectives. Semi-structured interviews serve as the primary data collection method, allowing for flexibility and depth in capturing participants' lived experiences. The dissertation presents the findings from the interview analysis, highlighting the multifaceted challenges faced by Saudi students and the diverse coping strategies employed. Themes emerge regarding the impact of cultural and religious factors, academic pressures, familial expectations, and the role of social support networks. Furthermore, the study sheds light on the significance of religious practices, therapy, medication, physical exercise, and cultural beliefs in navigating mental health challenges. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the experiences of Saudi graduate students in the United States and provide insights for academia, mental health professionals, and policymakers to better support this population.
