Cultural Violence in Higher Education: A Case Study of Women's Perspectives
Monica Klonowski
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, The University of Toledo
Despite a lack of conceptualization, Johan Galtung's theory of cultural violence is applied across a variety of disciplines. This case study seeks to conceptualize cultural violence in a public, 4-year university and describe how cultural violence varies based on women's cultural backgrounds and roles within the university. Using semi-structured, in-depth interviews with students, faculty, staff, and administrators and a postmodern feminist theoretical framework, the objective of this study is to develop key concepts that could describe how cultural violence exists in university settings and how it impacts individuals based on their cultural backgrounds and roles within the university with the goal of removing barriers and working toward positive peace in higher educational institutions.
