Northeastern Ohio African American Millennials' Perception of Postsecondary Career Technical Education

Ohio African American millennials represent a relatively small percentage of the population, overall employment, and the student population in career technical education. Therefore, understanding how a postsecondary career technical education institution can better meet the needs of underserved students, is an integral part of recruiting, enrolling, and retaining students in education programs, leading to employment in the skilled trades. The literature available primarily focused on two and four-year colleges and universities, with very little focus on other means of postsecondary education in the skilled trades. This study intends to address this gap. The research is a collection of survey and interview responses to determine the overall experiences, challenges, and satisfaction with career technical education programs. A deeper understanding of these experiences provides meaningful insight into how postsecondary education programs can better serve the needs of underserved populations. The findings indicated that African American Millennials who participated in career postsecondary technical education, felt it prepared them for employment and the investment in this education was meaningful.
