A Qualitative Study of Exploring the Experiences of the Student Veterans as They Pursue a Post-Secondary Degree
Valerie Smith White
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grambling State University
The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of Student Veterans as they pursue a post-secondary degree. The primary focus of the study was threefold: first, to explore the struggles Student Veterans face while pursuing a post-secondary degree, secondly, to explore the positive and negative experiences Student Veterans encounter while pursuing a post-secondary degree and, thirdly, to determine what type of support do the Student Veterans receive both externally and internally to the campus while pursuing a post-secondary degree. This study sought to understand the importance of student involvement in achieving academic success. It examined the experiences, social, and educational opportunities that led to academic achievement among Student Veterans. The study materialized five themes from the experiences of the Student Veterans' participants: time management, military-friendly campus, an adjustment to online courses versus sitting in the classroom, minimum financial issues, no desire to participate in extracurricular activities, and failure was never an option.
